RANGERS chief executive Craig Mather has held discussions with former director Dave King in South Africa about a possible return to Ibrox.

Businessman Mr King, who has settled a £44 million tax bill with the country's authorities, believes the club needs further investment to challenge for the League One title.

Mr King, who previously invested £20m in Rangers under Sir David Murray, is thought to be biding his time before moving to buy either a controlling or ownership stake in the club.

Mr Mather believes King's wealth, his emotional commitment to the club and popularity among fans would make him an ideal candidate to buy into the side.
