A PAIR of skis, which belonged to a Scottish explorer who was the first artist in residence in the Antarctic, are going under the hammer.

The winter equipment, formerly owned by William Gordon Burn Murdoch, is thought to be among the earliest of its kind found in Scotland. Murdoch lived from 1862 until 1939, travelled extensively and claimed to be the first person to play bagpipes in the Antarctic.

The cross-country skis, are expected to fetch up to £300 at an auction by Lyon & Turnbull on Wednesday.
