After declines over the last two decades, seabird numbers are at last showing encouraging signs.

Scottish Natural Heritage says a number of birds are still declining, including kittiwakes and Arctic skuas, whose Northern Isles' breeding strongholds have seen large declines over a number of years. However, the agency says that although the declines are serious, the latest results from from seabird researchers around Scotland are encouraging.

Both the Isle of May at the mouth of the Firth of Forth and Isle of Noss in Shetland recorded increases.

Andy Douse, SNH ornithologist, said: "Early indications are that the 2014 breeding season has been better for some species that have shown a pattern of low breeding success in recent years. Over the next few months the true picture will become clearer."
