SCOTS Commonwealth Games gold medallist Chris Sherrington has capped off his momentous year with another honour, the Royal Navy??s sportsman of the year.

Sherrington, part of Team Scotland??s successful judo contingent, was given the awarded by his regiment at a ceremony yesterday.

The title rounds off a ??fantastic?? year for the judoka, who won gold for Scotland in the +100kg category at the Glasgow Games this summer.

The 31-year-old, of Broxburn, West Lothian, said: ??This is a truly monumental moment; to be named the Royal Navy??s sportsman of the year is the greatest honour of my career.

??It has been a fantastic year; winning gold for Scotland in front of a home crowd was an unforgettable experience. But I??d never have been able to achieve hat level of judo if it wasn??t for the support of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

??It??s a privilege to receive the award; the grit and determination I acquired in the Marines has certainly paid off.??

Since achieving his success in the summer, Sherrington is now back with the Royal Marines full-time. He is currently based at Commando Logistics Regiment in Barnstaple, north Devon.

He was presented with his award by Rear Admiral Jonathan Woodcock.

Royal Navy athletics secretary and awards organiser Lieutenant Commander Ginge Gough said: ??All credit must go to Marine Chris Sherrington who has demonstrated himself to be an exceptional athlete.
