SCOTS author JK Rowling has written a fresh Harry Potter book for a new games console device that manufacturers claim will bring the story to life.

The Book of Spells is the first release for Sony's new PlayStation 3 Wonderbook – a programme that allows the reader to interact with and influence the storyline and characters through games and activities.

The device works with the PlayStation's Eye and Move motion controller and will allow fans to work through wizard training at Hogwarts School, learning magic spells, which are then cast using the controller as a wand.

Edinburgh-based Rowling said: "This is the closest a Muggle can come to a real spellbook. I've loved working with Sony's team to bring my spells, and some of the history behind them, to life."

The new device was revealed at the E3 video games trade show in Los Angeles yesterday. Sony said the Book of Spells focuses on entertainment, but there will also be educational titles.

Rowling is estimated to have made a total of £620 million from the Harry Potter books, which have sold around 450 million copies.

Earlier this year, she revealed that her next venture would be a book for adults called The Casual Vacancy, which is set in an English village called Pagford.
