HARRY POTTER author JK Rowling has made a "generous" donation to renovate a town hall.

The Edinburgh-based writer has backed ambitious plans to turn Aberfeldy Town Hall, Perthshire, into a music and drama venue. The hall's management team confirmed Rowling, who has a home nearby, made a substantial donation towards the £1.5 million project but they said they were not permitted to say how much.

The local community won the right of ownership in May after a five-year battle and plan to turn it into a 182-seat venue. Ian Menzies, of Locus Breadalbane, who manage the town hall, said: "It's going to be a wonderful resource."
