A school bus carrying 25 children was today involved in a motorway crash after the driver fell ill at the wheel.

The youngsters from Antonine Primary School in Drumchapel had set off on a school trip when the accident happened.

The bus collided with the central reservation of the M77 near Newton Mearns, just after 10am.

It was carrying P4 pupils from Antonine Primary School who were on their way to Ayr on a day trip.

Emergency services sent to the scene, on the southbound carriageway at junction five, and found the driver of the bus in a serious condition.

The children were said to be shaken but none were seriously injured. Two were treated for minor cuts at the scene. Their parents have been notified.

The driver was taken by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.

Police closed the M77 at junction five, Maidenhill interchange, and it remained closed while the road was cleared.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "A school bus was involved in a crash on the M77 at around 10am.

"The driver has been taken to hospital but there are no serious injuries among the children."

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: "The children were from Antonine Primary School in Drumchapel.

"The were no serious injuries and some children were treated for very minor injuries by the emergency services who gave them plasters.

"The teachers and pupils have continued on their day trip.All parents have been notified of the incident by text message."

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance service said: "Crews were called to the scene at 10.08am.

"The male driver was taken to the Hairmyres Hospital. Some of the children were checked out at the scene but none were found to be injured."
