HE famously honed his skills as a shy Scottish teenager in the bedroom of his family home.

Now songwriter and DJ Calvin Harris has been named as the fourth highest-earning celebrity under 30 in a Forbes rich list.

Dumfries-born Harris, 29, who played more than 150 shows from June 2012 to June 2013 and earned $46 million (£29m), was surpassed only by Lady Gaga, Canadian singer Justin Bieber and songstress Taylor Swift.

The record producer's earnings eclipsed chart-toppers such as Rihanna and Adele.

Born Adam Wiles, his gold-selling debut album, I Created Disco, was released in 2007 and contained the top ten singles Acceptable in the 80s and The Girls.

The son of a biochemist and a housewife, he stacked shelves in supermarket and worked in a fish factory before being discovered online by music executives.

His second studio album, Ready for the Weekend, in 2009, was a UK number one and he released his third, 18 Months, last October. As well as his solo success, he has written and produced a string of hits for top-selling artists.

He has signed up to be the first exclusive resident DJ at the MGM Grand's forthcoming Hakkasan Las Vegas nightclub and, in April, performed at the Bahrain Grand Prix post-race concert.

Lady Gaga has retained the title for the world's top earning young celebrity. Despite hip surgery that forced the cancellation of part of her tour, Lady Gaga still earned an estimated $80m (£52m) in the past year. This propelled her to the top of the Forbes list.

Justin Bieber came in a distant second with an estimated income of $58m (£38m). Taylor Swift was third, pulling in $55m (£36m), about $2m less than last year when she topped the list.

The Forbes website said Lady Gaga, 27, would have earned more had she not had to cancel some 20 US shows starting in February.

Gaga announced earlier this month she will release her next album, Artpop, on November 11.

After Harris in fourth place, Barbados-born pop star Rihanna rounded out the top five with earnings of $43 million (£28m).

British singer Adele, who won an Oscar for the theme from the James Bond movie Skyfall, was seventh on the list with an estimated $25 million (£16m).

To compile the ranking Forbes estimated entertainment-related income for the 12 months from June 2012 through June 2013 by talking to agents, managers, producers and executives.

Along with singers, two actresses also managed to make the top 10. Best actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, who wowed audiences and critics for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook and also appeared in The Hunger Games, earned $26 million (£17m).

This secured her the number eight spot, just ahead of fellow actress Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame.

She had earnings of $22 million (£14m).
