A SCOTS tourist has died after he and his wife were hit by a car in Florida on September 16.

Peter and Isobel Doherty, from Dunbartonshire, were sitting at a bus stop during a holiday in Orlando when a Ford Focus ploughed into them. Mrs Doherty suffered broken ribs, bruising and cuts while her husband, 68, was left in a coma and died on Sunday.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm a British national died in hospital on September 23. We are continuing to provide consular assistance."

Police are investigating if a street race caused the crash. Witnesses say they saw a Ford Focus and Honda Accord speeding just before the accident.

Passerby Charles Gray said: "The Focus was in the inside lane, and I witnessed it hit the kerb and quite violently bounce off and cut across the Accord. It then struck the bus stop sign, as well as the bench where there were people sitting."
