The chief executive of Scotland's national ballet has resigned in an unexpected move.

Cindy Sughrue is stepping down from her pivotal role as chief executive and executive producer at Scottish Ballet.

The company has issued a statement saying that the change takes place with "immediate effect."

A statement said: "The board would like to acknowledge the considerable contribution Cindy has made to Scottish Ballet and wishes her success in the future."

The process to recruit her successor will begin immediately.

Sughrue has been with the company for more than a decade.

In the interim, Scottish Ballet's artistic director, Christopher Hampson, will assume the role of acting Chief Executive.
