SCOTS stars Biffy Clyro and Calvin Harris will headline one of Europe's biggest free music festivals.

Radio 1's Big Weekend, a successor to the roadshows the station once staged, will take place this year in Londonderry.

The ticket-only event takes place from Friday, May 24, until Sunday, May 26, and is among a number of major concerts and events taking place in Londonderry as it celebrates being named the UK's first City of Culture.

Other acts to perform will include Ellie Goulding, Olly Murs, The Saturdays and The Script.

In all, there will be 40 acts taking part.

Ben Cooper, controller of Radio 1, said the line-up would thrill thousands of music fans. He said: "This event is my favourite moment of the year – watching a great crowd sing along to amazing artists makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end."

The Big Weekend will be broadcast live on Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra and streamed online. BBC3 will also air highlights from acts across the three days.

There will be a number of workshops and events in the city leading up to the concerts.

During the week, youngsters will be invited to attend Radio 1's Academy and take part in masterclasses in music, radio, television production, event management, digital media and journalism.
