Dr Bill Rattray, originally from Aberdeenshire, was found dead in the swimming pool of the house he shared with his wife, Margaret.

The 57 year-old father-of-two is thought to have died from natural causes.

He moved to the Caribbean in 2006 after being appointed to the post of Commissioner of Corrections and Rehabilitations.

Before moving to the Caymans, he had enjoyed a 30 year career in the civil service, managing Aberdeen and Peterhead prisons.

He also acted as Director of the Scottish Prison Service Training College.

The Cayman Islands Government said they were "shocked and saddened" by the news.

The acting Deputy Governor of the islands, Franz Manderson, said said: "On behalf of the whole Civil Service, and especially Her Majesty's Cayman Islands Prison Service, we wish to extend our deepest condolences to Dr Rattray's wife Margaret, who has become a much loved and respected school Principal in North Side and Savannah, to his two children and his brother, and to Dr Rattray's many friends here and in Scotland".

Dr Rattray's body was discovered on Saturday night in the communal pool at the couple's beach house.

He was the first person to take on the role as prisons Commissioner in the Cayman Islands, when his role was created to manage and develop new strategies for the country's three prisons.
