THE site of the one of the biggest names in Clyde shipbuilding history is to become a shopping park.

A new DIY superstore is to open on the former Scott Lithgow yard in Port Glasgow, creating 50 jobs, as part of a wider shopping development.

The new £10 million B&Q store is expected to open in November.

The group behind the plan, Gallagher Developments, said it comes on the back of a £40m investment in the area.

As well as the B&Q store, there will be a Costa Coffee Drive Thru Restaurant and a Marstons Family Pub and Restaurant.

B&Q will cover 65,000 sq ft, with an outdoor garden centre and a builders' yard, and it will have a 340-space car park.

Inverclyde Council leader Stephen McCabe said: "This is a welcome day for Port Glasgow and Inverclyde, marking a significant moment in the economic regeneration of the town.

"This investment shows real confidence in the future prosperity of Port Glasgow."

Scott Lithgow, which was formed in 1967, ceased trading in 1993 and the site was sold to Clydeport in 1996.
