A PORSCHE driver has been killed and his daughter seriously injured after the high performance sportscar crashed.

The Porsche 911 struck a barrier on a bend of the A82 Great Western Road in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire.

An eyewitness said the car was left unrecognisable following the accident.

Police said a 50-year-old man was driving west when it crashed near the West Park Hotel at about 9pm on Saturday. The driver, who has not yet been named, was taken to the Western Infirmary, where he died.

His 16-year-old daughter, a passenger in the car, was also taken to the hospital suffering from chest injuries. Her condition is described as stable.

Two appliances from the nearby Clydebank Fire Station attended to make the area safe.

Local taxi driver Keith Airlie, 44, who witnessed the aftermath, said: "It was the worse crash I'd ever seen. It was worse than a Formula One wreck. I know my cars and I couldn't even tell what type of car it was [because of the damage].

"The road was shut and it just looked like it would have been chaos."

Police said a report will be sent to the procurator- fiscal.

Constable John Hill said: "We have already spoken to people who were driving on the road at the time who stopped.

"However, I would appeal to anyone who saw the crash and has not already come forward to contact the road policing unit."
