TWO Glasgow University students face a lifetime ban from their union and could be suspended after allegations that women speakers were booed and subjected to sexist remarks during a debating championship.

Disciplinary action is to be taken against the pair, who have not been named, following an emergency meeting of the Glasgow University Union (GUU) board.

The students could be expelled if they are found to have breached an official code of conduct during the final of the GUU Ancients contest.

Rebecca Meredith and Marlena Valles claim sexist comments were made about their appearance and their speeches were interrupted by misogynistic males.

Video footage of the debate is now being examined as part of the inquiry.

Ms Meredith, 20, of Kilmacolm, a politics student at King's College, Cambridge, claimed their speeches were repeatedly interrupted by cries of "shame, woman" with comments made over their personal appearance.

The GUU's current debaters have threatened to resign over the matter.

The head of the debating team said: "We are angry, saddened, but in all honesty, not completely surprised that visitors to our debating home and our student Union have been left to feel unwelcome by some members."

More than 3500 students have put their names to an online petition calling for the suspension or expulsion of those members involved in the sexist heckling.
