Russian student Yulia Solodyankina vanished after discovering she would not receive an honours degree, it has emerged.

The 21-year-old, who has been missing for almost a month, was told by Edinburgh University on June 6 that she would graduate in physics with an ordinary degree.

She was last seen by friends in a bar that night and was also seen on CCTV footage boarding a bus to Glasgow the following day.

Police believe she may be in the Highlands.

It is understood that Ms Solodyankina did not pass her fourth-year exams and was unable to graduate with honours.

The official programme for the graduate ceremony on Monday, which she had been due to attend, did not list her among the students awarded an honours degree. Her name appeared in the Bachelor of Science category.

A spokesman for Edinburgh University said: "The university can confirm that Yulia Solodyankina was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science. Data Protection legislation prevents any further details on a student's personal information being released without the permission of that student."

Ms Solodyankina's father Dmitry, who travelled to Scotland for his daughter's graduation, earlier said she told him she had passed with a 2:1.
