The Tattoo in Edinburgh has sold out in the fastest time in four years.

All tickets for the 65th Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo have been snapped up, with all 215,800 tickets for the three-week military showpiece on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade now sold, generating £9.6m in box office receipts.

The success comes in the third season for Tattoo chief executive and producer Brigadier David Allfrey.

He said: "We are delighted to sell out the show.

"This represents a huge reward for all our staff and partners, who have worked so professionally.

"The 2014 Tattoo has been very well received by our audiences on Friday and Saturday and our Box Office continues to work hard to accept 'returns' - that cannot be used for whatever reason - and advertise these each day to customers who are without tickets.

"This is a special year for Scotland with the Commonwealth Games in the vanguard; focus is now shifting to the Edinburgh Festivals and the Ryder Cup later on. We are hugely proud to be playing our part in a particularly successful summer."

This is the 16th successive sold-out season for the Tattoo. Resale tickets may be available for performances until the end of the 2014 run on August 23.

More than 1,000 performers from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Singapore, India, Malta and the UK feature in this summer's Tattoo, which has a 'Our Home, Friends and Family' theme.

This year the show also marks the 350th anniversary of the founding of Her Majesty's Royal Marines.
