A partially blind pensioner was knocked to the ground when a thief tried to rob her.

The brave woman, who walks with a white stick, fought back and stopped the robber from stealing her handbag.

Police said the 78-year-old was approached from behind by a man who demanded her bag.

It happened in Broomhill Drive, close to the junction with Dumbarton Road, at around 3.20pm on Saturday.

The suspect ran off empty-handed.

He is described as white, with a local accent, 5ft 6in tall and of slim build. He was wearing a grey hooded top and grey bottoms.

Although the victim was uninjured, she has been left badly shaken.

Detective Constable Robert Allen of Partick Police Office said: "This was a brazen assault on an elderly woman who carries a white stick.

"The suspect deliberately attempted to prey on a vulnerable person in our community.

"Although she managed to hold on to her property, she is very shaken and lucky not to be more seriously injured after falling over as a result of the incident.

"We are looking for any help as to the identity of the man or anyone who saw him running on Dumbarton Road on a busy Saturday afternoon."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
