Three anti-nuclear campaigners are today expected to appear in court after allegedly staging a protest at Glasgow's Finnieston Crane to mark 30 years of the Faslane Peace Camp.

The men – aged 18, 19 and 25 – will appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court from custody.

All three are accused of scaling the 165ft crane and unfurling a banner reading "Nuclear disarmament – if not now, when?".

The three accused were all understood to be from the Faslane Peace Camp outside the gates of HM Naval Base Clyde – home of the UK's Trident nuclear submarine fleet.

Peace Campers plan 30 days of protest to mark their 30 years at Faslane, including a march to the base from Glasgow's George Square on June 21.

Peace camper Leonna O'Neill said there would be similar protests to the Finnieston Crane action.

She added: "We need to really keep reminding people of the connection with Scottish independence. There is very real chance of forcing the UK to get rid of its nuclear deterrent."

The original Faslane Peace Camp was set up by Margaret and Bobby Harrison in 1982 to protest against the Trident system being based on the Clyde.
