THERE are just eight days left to put forward workers and teams representing the best of the public and voluntary sectors for the Herald Society Awards 2014.

Our annual awards recognise the innovative work and dedication which helps make Scotland a better society to live in, in settings such as health, education and social services.

This year, for the first time, our Social Entrepreneur of the Year award, sponsored by Firstport, will recognise a business which is working to achieve social rather than purely financial goals.

Karen McGregor, Chief Executive of Firstport, said: "This award is a great opportunity for social entrepreneurs across Scotland to showcase the benefits they are bringing to communities. Being shortlisted will not only raise awareness of individual business, but also highlight the important role social enterprise plays in contributing to our society and economy."

Other categories include the Unsung Hero award, Worker of the Year, Team of the Year and Campaign or Campaigner of the Year.

The awards aim to highlight excellence and new approaches. Gordon Sloan, chair of GHA, which is sponsoring the Community Project of the Year said: "We look forward to hearing more about the projects which are changing communities and lives for the better."

EVH - Supporting Social Employers said the Unsung Hero award would celebrate "those inspirational people who give so much of themselves for others".
