TV mystic Derek Acorah receives driving ban after crashing his car

TV mystic Derek Acorah has been banned from driving and fined £1,000 after a car crash.

The 64-year-old, whose real name is Derek Johnson and who is best known for appearing on the series Most Haunted, was criticised after appearing at Bootle Magistrates' Court in Merseyside today where he admitted driving without due care and attention and failing to provide a breath test.

Senior district Crown prosecutor Philippa Kennedy said: "Derek Johnson's driving on that day could have caused serious injuries.

"Thankfully, the driver in the other car escaped without serious harm but did suffer several injuries and now has a fear of driving.

"Failing to give a breath sample is also a serious offence - no one is above the law.

"Johnson has received a substantial fine and driving ban which should send a strong message to all those who fail to drive without the required care and put others at risk."

Acorah crashed into another car on Scarisbrick New Road, Southport, on December 7 last year, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

He sped around a roundabout and veered across the carriageway, before crashing and leaving the other car written off and the driver with whiplash, cuts and bruising.

The psychic failed a breath test at the scene but refused to give a further breath test at the police station.

Acorah was fined £1,000, ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge and £85 costs, and was disqualified from driving for 28 months.
