Two men believed to be carrying a sofa died when part of a balcony collapsed yesterday.

At least six others were injured in the incident in Cadogan Square in Knightsbridge, central London, shortly before 10am. All eight are believed to be removal men.

Forensic officers have spent the day examining the scene, while a cordon was placed at the front of the five-storey terrace.

Greg Hands, Conservative MP for Chelsea and Fulham, said: "Believe balcony broke when the removal men were moving a sofa out and the combined weight might have broken it.

"Casualties were removal staff. My thoughts are with their families."

London Ambulance Service (LAS) initially said one man died and another was taken to hospital.

The Metropolitan Police later said a second man had died in hospital.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said the two were Polish men in their twenties and renovations had been going on at the building for the past year.
