Two people have died as a result of separate lightning strikes in the Brecon Beacons.

A further two people remain in hospital following the lightning storm at around mid-day on the Pen Y Fan mountain range in Powys, mid-Wales, the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil said.

A statement on the hospital's Facebook page said: "As a result of two separate lightning strikes today in the Brecon Beacons, we can confirm that two people have died, another has been transferred to Morriston Hospital because of burns and one other person continues to receive treatment at Prince Charles Hospital."

In an earlier statement, the Welsh Ambulance Service said three people had been taken to hospital after being hit by lightning while walking together.

Two were airlifted to hospital by helicopter with life-threatening injuries, including a man in his 50s, while the third was taken by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the three later died, the hospital said, while the second person who died was injured separately.
