Two teenagers have been killed in a road crash.
Adam Crawford, 19, and Liam Whiteford, 18, both of Paisley, died at the scene after the car crashed into a tree at the side of the road.
The two teenagers were painting and decorating students and were driving back from college with another friend when the accident happened at Old Greenock Road, Langbank, at around 3.45pm on Thursday.
An 18-year-old man, also a passenger in the car, was taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries.
Sergeant Mark Miller, the officer dealing the investigation, said the two families were "shattered by their loss".
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Investigators have appealed for witnesses.
Meanwhile, tributes have been paid to an eight-year-old boy who has died after being hit by a van while playing with a friend in the streets near his home on Seafield Street in the village of Portsoy, Banffshire.
Iain Sturrock was described as a "loving little boy" by his family. He died after being struck by a Citroen Berlingo just a street away from his home.
Police closed the road where the accident happened for several hours as collision investigators examined the scene. Locals said the youngster was with a nine-year-old friend at the time of the accident.
His parents, James and Johanna, released a statement through police speaking of their grief and shock at the tragedy.
It said: "Iain was a loving little boy who lived for swimming, karate and going to Cubs.
"We are in shock and are absolutely devastated that he has been taken from us and request privacy while we come to terms with what has happened."
The accident stunned the local community, with many people leaving floral tributes and soft toys outside a pharmacy near to where the accident happened.
The organisers of the village's Christmas light switch-on also decided to cancel the event as a mark of respect.
Aberdeenshire Council's head of education Andrew Griffiths said: "My thoughts are with friends and family of Iain at this sad time and support has been offered to fellow pupils at the school.
"I pass on my heartfelt condolences to everyone who knew him."
Banff and district councillor Ian Gray, who lives in Portsoy, said: "This is a devastating and shocking time for something like this to happen - especially on the main street. The street is usually quite safe and it is just an absolute tragedy.
"The community is in shock, being so close to Christmas makes it even worse. Everyone's thoughts are with the boy's family and friends."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
