A BRANCH of Scotland's largest public sector union has moved to cut all ties and funds to Labour.

Glasgow City Unison members will be urged to disaffiliate themselves from the party during the union's AGM on Friday. Senior figures said it would be hugely symbolic.

Although Unison is affiliated to Labour, "an arrangement which sees millions of pounds paid to Labour from member's via the Affiliated Political Fund" according to Unison, individual members are free to opt out of subscribing to the party. Only 10% of the Glasgow branch pay the Affiliated Party Fund with a local policy of discouraging members operating for some time.

Unison criticised Labour-controlled Glasgow City Council for pioneering new Westminster 45-day notice period workforce laws which they claim make it easier to sack staff.

The branch claims the council has threatened to terminate their contracts and rehire them on lesser terms. Scottish Labour said it is confident its link with the unions will continue.
