A man who was lured into a knife attack with his brother through a false car ad has spoken of how he tried to flee the onslaught.

The two men were the victims of an attack which happened in daylight after they travelled more than 100 miles from the north east Scotland to Edinburgh to buy a car through through Gumtree website.

Peter and James Stewart, aged 43 and 45 respectively, were attacked at about 6pm on April 9 in Wardieburn Place West, Edinburgh.

James Stewart, who had several stab wounds, has returned to Aberdeen and was being cared for at home by his ex-partner and mother of their two children.

He was stabbed in the stomach and the back while his brother Peter, of Kincorth, was stabbed in the chest.

James was reported as saying: "I thought I was dead. I thought I would never hear my kids speak again.

"All I could do was think I had to get to Peter.

"He will have a long recovery ahead but he is over the worst."

The men had travelled to the capital from Aberdeen area on the understanding that they were going to purchase a vehicle seen online.

Both were attacked in a common stair by two men, who quickly fled the scene.

Police Scotland said inquiries are ongoing.

Officers, who are treating the incident as an attempted murder, want to speak to any witnesses who may have seen the attackers.

The first suspect is described as being white, aged between 17 and 19.

He has a central Scotland accent and light-coloured short hair, which is shaved at the sides. He was wearing a light sky-blue hooded sweatshirt and grey jogging bottoms.

The second suspect is white, in his mid-20s, stocky build and was wearing a striped top.
