EUROMILLIONS winners Colin and Chris Weir have attended the official opening of Largs Thistle's new grounds, after donating £750,000 to their local team.

The multi-millionaires from Largs, who scooped £161 million in July last year, paid for a new state-of-the art pitch and training facilities at Barrfields Stadium.

The couple attended a friendly match against Morton yesterday afternoon to mark the opening.

In the match programme, Colin Weir said: "Largs Thistle has always done a lot for our town, encouraging sport and supporting young players.

"The move to make it a 'community' football club is inspired and I feel very privileged to be involved. Largs Thistle Community Football Club has a good ring to it.

"The new pitch and training facilities will hopefully attract more people to Barrfields. The aspiration is to see the grounds used throughout the week, by teams, families and even different sports. That would be a great result.

"I hope you enjoy the opening events and that you continue to support your local team."

The 4G pitch is an artificial grass surface which remains soft all year-round and does not freeze.

The Weirs have donated to a number of sporting causes since securing Europe's biggest ever lottery win.

They helped raise funds for local 15-year-old tennis hopeful Ross Wilson to attend a tennis academy in Barcelona and 15-year-old racing driver Gregor Ramsay to attend the European and Italian F3 European Abarth.

The couple also donated £102,000 for the refurbishment of Sportscotland's National Sports Training Centre in Inverclyde.
