MEMBERS of the judiciary have sometimes been accused of being out of touch when dealing with cases.

But a sheriff took it a step further yesterday (wed), when he proved himself to be no fashion follower.

William Wood told Perth Sheriff Court, where he was dealing with Michelle Connan, 30, that he had no idea what Jeggings - the garment which looks like skin-tight denim jeans - are.

He queried if the Crown had made a spelling mistake on the charge sheet against Connan, who pleaded guilty stealing the £7 item a store in Perth.

Sheriff Wood asked her: "Do you accept you stole a pair of Jeggings, whatever they might be?"

Connan confirmed she did and Sheriff Wood then asked fiscal depute Bill Kermode: "Is it Jeggings or should it be leggings?"

Mr Kermode confirmed the charge was spelt correctly, but added: "The Crown cannot tell you what Jeggings are unfortunately."

Connan's solicitor John Adams said: "Jeggings are leggings which look like jeans."

Connan, of Inverness, was fined a total of £525 for the theft and failing to appear at a previous hearing.
