A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after being found in a street with serious burns.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Selkirk's Hillside Terrace at around 7.20am today and the woman was taken to Borders General Hospital.

The street forms part of the A7, a key route through the Borders. The road was closed to traffic in both directions at Selkirk while police carried out their investigations.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in the Scottish Borders responded to an incident in Selkirk at around 7.20am on Wednesday 18th March where a woman was found with serious burn injuries in Hillside Terrace.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance and the woman was taken to Borders General Hospital where she is currently in a critical condition.

"Inquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this matter are ongoing."
