A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car as she crossed a road.

The 49-year-old was struck on Almondvale Road Road, Livingston, West Lothian, as she crossed the road shortly after getting off a bus.

The crash, involving a Volkswagon car, happened at around 5.30pm yesterday.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where she is in a critical condition.

Sergeant Neil Inglis, of Police Scotland, said: "We are urgently seeking witnesses to this road traffic collision and anyone who was on Almondvale Road around 5.30pm, which would have been a busy time, is urged to contact police."

The road was closed for six hours while road traffic police carried out investigations at the scene.

Anyone with information can contact police on the non-emergency line, 101.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, a driver has died after crashing off a country road.

The accident happened early this morning on the A950 near New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, when the silver Vauxhall Astra left the road.

The driver died at the scene, police said.

Bad weather has been affecting travel in the area over the past two days but officers are investigating all the circumstances of the crash.

The road was closed for around five hours and police are appealing for any witnesses or who saw a silver Vauxhall Astra in the area to contact them.
