AN auction of works by the late Scottish artist George Wyllie has raised more than £57,000.

The sale of works from his studio at The Lighthouse in Glasgow was expected to raise £40,000,and auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull said they were pleased with the results of the sale.

The auction featured 44 items, including paintings, sculptures, sketches, prints and articles not seen in public before.

A version of one of Wyllie's most famous sculptures, the Straw Locomotive, was sold for £14,500, after being valued at £10,000.

The George Wyllie Foundation, which will be launched next month, is said to be hoping whoever bought the piece will lend it to the foundation for display.

Mr Wyllie, who died last year aged 90, created the Straw Locomotive in 1987, the Paper Boat in 1990, and the Running Clock outside Glasgow's Buchanan Bus Station. He is lauded as one of the most influential artists of the past 50 years.

The ashes of the original Straw Locomotive are kept by Wyllie's family.

The second version of the artist's original piece, a full-scale rendition of a classic steam engine made from straw, was sold anonymously at auction on Tuesday night.

Works by the late painter John Cunningham also sold for £139,431.
