A CAMPAIGN has been launched to name a street after a man who helped save a policeman's daughter from being murdered by Robert Black

David Herkes took down the registration of the serial child killer's van and called police on July 14 1990 after he saw the child being bundled into Black's van.

Black, who died last month in prison in Belfast, was arrested in the Borders village of Stow the same day, with the girl tied up and close to death. Black was later convicted of four murders.

Bus driver Gary Forbes, 47, Gorebridge, Midlothian, has launched a bid to honour Mr Herkes, who died in 2012.

Mr Forbes said: "When Robert Black died a lot of people put posts up on Facebook, so I put up a post about David Herkes saying we should be paying tribute to him. The community here sees him as a hero.

"I then got lots of messages of support and about how much he was liked locally. I spoke to the (Mr Herkes's) family, they were overwhelmed and gave their permission."

The proposal is to be presented to the Provost of Midlothian Council for approval and could be used on a new housing estate in Gorebridge.
