The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for ice and snow for large parts of Scotland.

Yellow 'be aware' warnings are in place for snow and ice in Orkney and Shetland, the Highlands and Western Isles, Grampian and, Central, Tayside and Fife.

The warnings are in place from 8pm tonight until 8am tomorrow morning.

Motorists have been warned to prepare for icy conditions on the roads overnight, as temperatures fall below freezing.

The Herald:

Between five and 10cm of snow is expected to fall on higher ground in the northern Grampians, while one to three centimetres have been forecast in lower areas.

The cold conditions have been caused by an 'arctic airmass'.

The Met Office said: "Heavy wintry showers today will bring rain, sleet, hail and snow, occasionally reducing visibility, but away from the higher ground, any settling snow will probably be very temporary until this evening.

"After the sun goes down, lying snow becomes more likely. Additionally, given the number of wintry showers today, many roads will have less chance to warm up, and may then remain wet until temperatures fall below freezing overnight."
