Two former managers at Edinburgh Airport have sentenced to community service after being convicted of fraud.

Steven Spalding, 46, and Stephen Cunningham, abused their positions of power at the airport to create false invoices and bogus consultancy fees.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Spalding, former operations manager for property and retail, and Cunningham, who was a commercial account manager were both sentenced to 200 hours of community service.

The men placed pressure on an external supplier to the airport to provide false invoices showing consultancy fees, which were paid into Spalding's bank account, with half then being transferred to Cunningham.

They also abused their positions as managers to secure fuel cards and laptops which they were not entitled to, while Spalding also intercepted a further payment from on off airport contractor and arranged for it to be paid into his bank account.

The two managers resigned in November 2013 following a disciplinary hearing and a subsequent police investigation saw them charged with a number of frauds.

Detective Inspector Arron Clinkscales, of Police Scotland, said: "The police investigation revealed that both Steven Spalding and Stephen Cunningham abused their positions as managers and carried out calculated schemes of deception over a prolonged period, to obtain funds and other goods and services, which they were clearly not entitled to.

"They applied pressure on an external supplier, threatening to withdraw airport contracts, unless fraudulent payments were made to them.

"Police Scotland will thoroughly investigate any reports of wrongdoings by employees, and report the circumstances to the Procurator Fiscal, where appropriate."
