AN INNOVATIVE approach to electric vehicle charging hubs, offering different services in different zones, is being planned for Edinburgh. This strategic “zonal approach” – believed to be the first in Scotland – will look at different needs of electric vehicles in different areas.
It proposes three strategic charging zones – the city centre, residential and peripheral areas, such as at a park and ride.
They would be tailored for specific needs, including rapid charging points in the city.
By contrast, park and rides would have facilities suitable for drivers leaving their cars in one place for longer periods of time.
There are already 58 charging points in the city, with around 489 electric cars, which emit fewer carbon emissions than petrol or diesel engines, registered.
Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said it would “help the council and our partners maximise the benefits and opportunities of this cleaner, greener option”.
Edinburgh’s Electric Vehicle Action Plan will be considered by members of the Transport and Environment Committee today.
