Motorists are facing a 50 mile detour after a serious crash on the A82.

Three people were taken hospital after the accident, between Tyndrum and Crianlarich, led to the closure of the route in both directions for several hours, creating a 50 mile diversion.

One of the injured was flown by helicopter to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Three cars and a van were involved in the collision as a band of torrential rain and lightning storms hit towards the north of the country.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The A82 north of Crianlarich is closed in both directions due to a traffic collision.

“Be patient if you have been caught up in the tailbacks.”

The diversion, which would have affected anyone driving north or south from the Fort William area, took in the A85 at Dalmally and the A83 at Inverarary and A82 at Tarbet.

There were also reports of flooded lines at Falls of Cruachan and between Glenfinnan and Lochailort.
