A plane bound for Chicago has been diverted to Edinburgh Airport after declaring a mid-air emergency.

United Airlines flight 929 declared an emergency shortly after leaving London Heathrow at around 7.50am this morning.

It is understood that the aircraft began leaking fuel shortly after take off.

The plane has now landed at Edinburgh Airport and is awaiting inspection.

Several flights are now in holding patterns over Edinburgh Airport following the plane's emergency landing.
