SCOTLAND'S two main airports reported a drop in passenger numbers last month, new figures show.

The number of passengers travelling through Glasgow Airport in January was down 0.4% compared with the same period last year.

The airport said the decrease could be down to the impact of high winds, which caused widespread disruption across the country on January 3.

However, managing director Amanda McMillan said that international traffic was up as a result of a strong demand for overseas travel.

She said: "Emirates' announcement that it is to double its daily service to Dubai ensured we made the best possible start to 2012 and we were encouraged by the strong performance of other carriers such as easyJet, KLM and Jet2.com. International traffic was the main driver of our growth in 2011 and we are pleased to see this trend continue into 2012."

Edinburgh Airport's passenger numbers fell by 4.4% last month when compared to January 2011.

Aberdeen was the only Scottish BAA-owned airport to see a rise in passenger numbers last month, up 13.9% on the same period in 2011.

Last month, Aberdeen Airport dealt with 227,600 passengers while Glasgow handled 416,300 and Edinburgh 557,400.

Overall, passenger numbers at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen rose between February 2011 and January 2012.

Glasgow was up 4.6%, Edinburgh 8% and Aberdeen 12.1%.
