THE Scottish Government's transport agency has performed a U-turn over the planned nightly closure of a main road.

Campaigners had been outraged that the plan to close the A82 along the side of Loch Lomond was announced with just a few days' notice, but last night Transport Scotland said the closure had been postponed for two weeks.

Road users have for decades been frustrated by the historical Pulpit Rock bottleneck and demanded its removal. Ahead of an £11 million project which will begin next year to upgrade the route, when traffic measures will include closing the road for 14 weeks, ground work was due to start tomorrow and continue for four nights.

However, businesses in and around Fort William were furious there was little or no warning of the closure, particularly as it comes after two weeks without a train service between the town and Crianlarich.
