IF the European Commission is correct in saying that Scotland would not be a member of the EU after independence, and would have to apply for membership, does that mean that, if the Flemish and Walloon parts of Belgium were to separate, as they keep threatening to do, the EU would have its headquarters in a country which is not actually a member of the EU ("Separate Scotland must apply to join EU– Brussels", The Herald, December 6)?

APPARENTLY the European Commission would require an independent Scotland to re-apply for membership of the EU. If correct, perhaps voting for Scottish independence may be the best option for those (largely to be found amongst supporters of UKIP and the Conservative Party) who favour withdrawal from the EU as a political priority.
