IN response to your recent article of (“St Andrews University hits out at claims it ‘prefers’ fee-paying students from England over Scots”, The Herald, July 12) you may be interested to know that at Abertay University we are proud that more than 82 per cent of our students are Scottish-domiciled. During the uncertain times following the EU referendum, we will continue to focus on our work with high schools and colleges, ensuring more students gain access to higher education.

Our admissions process takes into account the context and circumstances in which an individual’s qualifications were achieved, allowing us to offer places to students from a wide range of backgrounds. For example, we have robust articulation agreements with colleges to ensure credits can be transferred over to us.

At a time when some universities will move towards increasing the number of places for rUK and international students to boost their revenues, we will continue with our policy of articulation, thus enabling more Scottish students to go to a Scottish university. This is essential; helping our young people gain access to the higher education they desire should be the cornerstone of any progressive society.
