DOES Alex Salmond really think that David Cameron needs his advice on the matter of awarding a knighthood to our reigning sports hero, Andy Murray (“Salmond urges Cameron to honour Wimbledon hero with knighthood”, The Herald, July 18)? We all know that Andy will get his knighthood in due course. But he is still in his twenties – and there is so much more to come from the great man.

Nevertheless, David Cameron may well be planning the knighthood for this year. In which case, is Mr Salmond preening himself for the moment when he can remind us that he had “urged” him to do so? Or was he just having another sly dig at the former Prime Minister?
