PELE is still the greatest footballer of all time (“Pele looks forward to taking centre stage in Glasgow again”, The Herald, September 15, and Letters, September 19). I also watched the Scotland-Brazil match in 1966 as a young student. My only chance to see the best player in the world was lost due to the rough tactics of the late Billy Bremner, no doubt simply following orders.

It was an era of rough tackling and weak refereeing and Pele was subsequently kicked out of the 1966 World Cup a few weeks later. Brazil was an ageing force beaten by Hungary, but Pele was to triumph in 1970 in the best World Cup finals dominated by the World's greatest ever player.

Puskas and Messi are worthy rivals but only Pele triumphed at the highest level, the World Cup.
