THE Duke of Cambridge wants us all to concentrate on saving the African elephant, which is facing extinction in the wild (“Duke: Elephants could be killed off in 25 years”, The Herald, September 23). Beezer idea. To assist him I will instruct my valet not to buy on my behalf any expensive ivory trinkets on my next official visit to China.

One wonders if it may have been a greater PR coup if, instead of fretting over problems in Africa, he was as vociferous about the plight of many of his future subjects who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Still, there are far more poor people than elephants and Princess Charlotte will doubtless be able to gawp at them in their natural environment for many years to come.
