IT was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Arnold Palmer.

He was a fantastic golfer who singlehandedly created the modern game of golf and everything that today's golfers have they owe directly to Arnold Palmer.

He was, however, much more than just a sportsman. I attended one of the last Masters tournaments in Augusta in which he competed. I was chatting to an Augusta National member as we watched the tournament when Arnie spotted us over the ropes, and though he was competing he came over to speak to the member, who was a friend of his. My new acquaintance introduced me as a golfer over from Scotland. He shook my hand and looked me straight in the eye and for that instant he was solely focused on me as an individual.

In that instant I understood what made him such a special person. He genuinely cared about people and valued each and every one. He transcended sport and was a truly wonderful human being. Rest in peace, Arnie.
