THE article by Stephen Naysmith in relation to the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (“Judge’s vow on child abuse probe as costs rise to £2,5m”, The Herald, October 18) states that I have insisted that the scope of the inquiry will not be expanded. I have not done so.

Expansion of the inquiry’s terms of reference is not a matter for me. These were set out by a Scottish Government. The inquiry does not have the power to alter those terms.

I am determined to respond to the remit of this inquiry independently and thoroughly. I would, again, encourage anyone who feels they have relevant information to please contact the inquiry.

The Rt. Hon Lady Smith,

Chair of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, PO Box 24085, Edinburgh.
