Nobody ever questioned the 1997 devolution referendum result, because it was an overwhelming 73 per in favour.

Nigel Smith, who led that successful campaign, has said that a second independence referendum decision should require a 55 per cent majority. I think it should be 60 per cent or higher because the SNP's second referendum bill seems to be driven by their inability to accept that even a 55 per cent No vote in 2014 is inconclusive.

This is too important a decision to base on a simple majority
