IT was very moving to hear Michelle Thomson MP speak in parliament about being raped as a 14-year-old (“Police launch investigation into MP’s rape revelations”, The Herald, December 9). It was brave of her to tell her story in order to show other women in this situation that they are not alone and to call on all women to stand up for our sisters and speak out about violence against women.

However, we must call on men to stand up for women and speak out about violence against their sisters, daughters, wives, friends and colleagues. Only then will rape cease to be a cause for shame and humiliation but rather an abhorrent and unacceptable crime.
