Those who make a connection between the Scots language and dyslexia/illiteracy display breathtaking ignorance of the roots of auld Scots (or Lallans) and crass insensitivity to Scots speakers and those who struggle with dyslexia (Voices of the week, January 8). Burns wrote and spoke in Scots and his work is universally appreciated the world over. Anyone who classed Burns as being illiterate would be laughed out of court. As for the cradle of auld Scots (or Lallans) being an SNP construct, again this displays a breathtaking ignorance of the roots of Scots. English was not always our common language. Old Welsh, French, Flemish, Gaelic and Norse, were also spoken in Scotland alongside Inglis, which was brought by the Angles who emanated from the banks of the river Elbe on the European continent. I proudly write this letter in defence of fellow dyslexics and Scots speakers.
