TWO issues arise from Bruce Henderson's comment on vehicle speed capabilities and police enforcement on speeding (Letters, January 16). First, why are vehicles with a capacity to travel at 147mph and beyond allowed on our roads when such speeds are way beyond the absolute maximum speed limits? Secondly, surely in this day of technological detection is there any requirement for a police vehicle to outperform an obvious speeding suspect? Such action merely duplicates the risk to the general public as has sadly been proven by recorded "chase" tragedies.

RATHER than the police chasing suspects at speeds of 147mph, with the prospect of catastrophic innocent, would it not be far safer for everybody if they radioed ahead to arrange a road block or other proven means of halting the getaway car?
